The novel can be used perfectly to get to know a very specific setting or an entire country. A narrative proposal with the intention of approaching an environment, gives you the subjectivity of who has lived in that place.

It may sound like a truism, but there is a lot of relevance in the idea. In the end, beyond the official account, the knowledge of the intra-histories, of the experiences and anecdotes, of the customs, myths and own legends, offer a much more real perspective of the moment and even of the past of the people of a country. If all this is adorned with the more artistic side of language, be sure that you will fall in love with the images presented.

It's kind of like differentiating between sightseeing or traveling. Literature can always be a fascinating journey.

It was not so long ago that I was in Ecuador. I visited Guayaquil and the community of Montañita and some other coastal town. I entered the dark Pacific at night with a fishing boat to celebrate an initiation rite (the typical thing that is done at a bachelor party) and above all, I walked hand in hand with local people and I soaked up that reality that only shows the day to day of any street beyond the tourist circuits.

This book is my second trip to Ecuador. On this occasion my guides are Antonio and Leopoldo, two young idealists still with the necessary drive to surrender to an ideal. Actually, the ideal seems more like a contribution from Mauro Javier, the author himself. It is probably an exercise in self-convincing towards a better future for this country on the part of one of his compatriots.

The point is that Leopoldo and Antonio think that he has a lot to contribute and they launch into politics. Both come from wealthy houses but are convinced of the need to change things. In the social antipodes, which are not ideological, we find Rolando and Eva, cultured by vocation and disinherited by social class.

Between them, in this novel we enjoy a complete overview of Ecuador, with details of the country, its people and its great political and social burdens.
