The 3 Best Daniel Day-Lewis Movies

As time goes by, the more we will miss an acting genius like Daniel Day-Lewis. It would be a matter of the intensity with which he assumed each role, the point is that he probably suffered from that wear and tear that sometimes attacks those who give their all in any creative facet. Something like Bunbury surpassed in voice and soul by the monster on stage.

The point is that Lewis transmitted to his characters that power, that outburst that always made him the protagonist even if he did not lead the cast on duty. There is no Daniel Day-Lewis film in which we do not remember him greatly. And we could even swear that he was the protagonist in any tape in which he participated. More than virtue, that also, his was complete dedication.

With certain similarities to another great one like Sean Penn, with that same dramatic vision towards the transcendent, that totem of the seventh art ends up being erected. A Lewis who is never completely forgotten once he retires to his house in the countryside, whether with his garden as a gardener or with his ghosts like Allan Poe, who knows...

It often happens that reality becomes legend and the most unexpected characters in their heroes. And of course, to the Irish nationalist imagery the problem of the four from Guildford did not even come to light. Those poor devils unjustly imprisoned after being sentenced in the UK for a brutal attack. In the same way that the judicial outrage was fireworks, the imputation of the role of heroes to the boys by the IRA was also repulsive.

And in the middle they, some kids who, although they participate in that aversion to the English as a homeland, it is not that they went beyond the noisy protest that perhaps was due more to that typical disenchantment of youth. In fact, there is an aspect that Daniel Day-Lewis raises in this film to human and sociological levels of the first magnitude. And it is that the movie, above all, is defined very well from the title.

Gerry Conlon's relationship with his father reminds us of those days when the father's authority is questioned. In the face of insolence and contempt, his father's love for him; in the face of uprooting and abandonment, the love of the father. The background is clear that it is the Irish conflict, but the substance of the film is more the father-son relationship. Until that point of no return that happens sometimes. I mean when one still suffers from that youthful irreverence that prevents asking a parent for forgiveness. Gerry is left without a father before the moment of forgiveness arrives. That is the true lost homeland, the heart of a father that stops beating without anything being clear.

Gangs of New York

The typical ensemble film in which the image of Daniel Day-Lewis' character sweeps everything away. In fact, Di Caprio could do little on this occasion to reach the level and intensity of Lewis. Of course, the character of Bill "The Butcher" wins us over with that histrionic violence that is already born from Lewis's first look and expression. While Di Caprio has to transmute into a much slower Amsterdam, with his man-of-the-world vision.

As the film progresses, immersed in a correct darkness that does not mince words about how the story is really written, the antagonism of both characters keeps us peering into that dark world full of sinister theatricality. There is no glorious country without misery or war that deserves to be praised in any chronicle. Because they are all mercenaries with interests as spurious as those of the leaders themselves who lead one faction or another.

New York was that marginal neighborhood of Five Points, from there the city that it is today was built. Because currently any city, not just NY, boasts of its integration of cultures. But in the past, armies fed on those second-class citizens who lived poorly in marginal neighborhoods. Any war could be the excuse. But if you are going to go to war, why not start it in your own city...

Eternal smile of New Jersey

Not that Lewis ever fell into any kind of stereotype. But reviewing his filmography one is reminded of the disparity of his representations. When an actor is able to make you forget any of his previous characters as soon as the first scene begins, he has undoubtedly achieved that perfect mimicry that varies depending on the context until it is unrecognizable...
